Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, professionally known as Spyro, has refuted viral claims suggesting he blamed a career slump on his past collaboration with music stars Davido and Mayorkun.

The controversy stems from a resurfaced interview clip, allegedly from Hip TV, in which Spyro was quoted as saying that his 2018 remix of Funke featuring Davido and Mayorkun failed to deliver the breakthrough he anticipated. According to the viral post made by popular blog @Naija_PR on X (formerly Twitter), Spyro supposedly claimed the collaboration marked the beginning of a downturn in his career.

The post quickly stirred backlash from Davido’s fans and the wider music community, accusing Spyro of being ungrateful and attempting to shift blame for his early struggles.

However, Spyro has come out to firmly deny the quote attributed to him. Taking to his Instagram story, the singer wrote: “This is false!!! I never said anything like this. I give you 24 hours to take this down or be prepared to face the consequences.”

Spyro clarified that while his career had its ups and downs, he has never publicly or privately faulted Davido or Mayorkun for any setbacks. He emphasized respect and gratitude towards the artists, especially for their contributions during the early stages of his career.

The original remix of Funke garnered considerable attention in 2018 and was seen by many as a strong step for Spyro’s emerging career. Since then, he has gradually gained mainstream traction, most notably with his 2023 hit Who’s Your Guy? and its remix featuring Tiwa Savage.

As the dust settles, fans have called for responsible reporting and a more accurate representation of artists’ words, especially in a digital age where misinformation can escalate quickly.
