In a significant move to strengthen international cooperation, Lagos State has expressed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Sweden, particularly in technology, cybersecurity, and sustainable infrastructure. The announcement came during a high-profile courtesy visit by Her Royal Highness, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, to the Lagos House in Marina on Tuesday.

A Meeting of Minds: Lagos and Sweden’s Shared Vision

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasized Lagos’ pivotal role as Nigeria’s economic hub and a gateway to Africa. He highlighted the state’s ongoing digital transformation, including a massive 6,800-kilometer fibre optic project, with 3,500 km already completed to boost internet connectivity.

“We are positioning Lagos as Africa’s next tech powerhouse,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Google is building a data centre here, and at least four other major data centres are underway. With a population of 22 million—twice Sweden’s size—the opportunities for Swedish partnerships in IT, cybersecurity, and smart infrastructure are immense.”

Princess Victoria’s Praise for Lagos’ Economic Potential

The Crown Princess, accompanied by Swedish Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Sweden, Ambassador Tiwatope Elias-Fatile, commended Lagos for its dynamic business environment.

“We see vast potential for growth and collaboration,” Princess Victoria said. “Swedish companies are already thriving here, and we are excited to explore further opportunities in green energy, digital innovation, and sustainable urban development.”

Sweden Opens First Nigerian Trade Office in Lagos

A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of Sweden’s first trade office in Nigeria, set to be inaugurated in Lagos. Minister Carlson described the move as a strategic step to enhance economic exchanges.

“Lagos is the ideal place to start,” he said. “This office will strengthen trade relations, facilitate investments, and support Swedish and Nigerian businesses in sectors like renewable energy, smart cities, and digital finance.”

Cultural Exchange and Warm Welcome

The visit was not all business—Princess Victoria was treated to a vibrant display of Nigerian culture. The Lagos State Cultural Troupe performed in her honor, and in a light-hearted moment, the Crown Princess joined in dancing, delighting attendees.

As a token of goodwill, First Lady Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu and Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the deputy governor, presented the royal guest with traditional African gifts.

What’s Next for Lagos-Sweden Relations?

With Sweden’s expertise in sustainability and Lagos’ booming tech scene, this partnership could accelerate:

  • Smart city initiatives (e.g., renewable energy, efficient transport)
  • Cybersecurity collaborations to protect digital growth
  • Expanded Swedish investments in Lagos’ infrastructure

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has made it clear: Lagos is open for business, and global partnerships like this one are key to its future as a leading African megacity.

As Crown Princess Victoria’s visit concludes, one thing is certain—the seeds of a transformative partnership have been planted. Will this be the start of a new era in Nigeria-Sweden relations? Only time will tell, but Lagos is ready to lead the charge.
