New facility in Yaba combines digital innovation with physical infrastructure to enhance education access
Miva Open University has officially launched its Lagos Study Centre in Yaba, marking a significant milestone in its mission to deliver accessible, flexible, and community-oriented higher education across Nigeria. The unveiling, held Tuesday morning, signals a new era in the institution’s blended learning strategy, integrating the strengths of digital education with the benefits of a physical learning environment.
In a statement issued ahead of the event, the university described the centre as a pivotal development in its commitment to redefining the educational experience for students nationwide.
A Vision for Inclusive and Flexible Learning
Speaking on the launch, Chancellor of Miva Open University, Sim Shagaya, highlighted the centre’s role in fostering both academic excellence and student support.
“This centre is a testament to our belief that learning should be flexible, accessible, and supported by a community that encourages growth,” said Shagaya.
He further emphasized that the initiative goes beyond academics, integrating lifestyle-focused features designed to support holistic student development.
Student-Centered Design and Modern Facilities
Registrar Iheanyi Akwitti also spoke on the design and function of the new facility, noting its alignment with Miva’s vision for a well-rounded educational environment.
“From modern study rooms to state-of-the-art computer facilities, we are providing a space that is not only conducive to learning but also supports student well-being,” Akwitti stated.
The Lagos Study Centre is equipped with a digital E-Library, a 197-computer CBT (Computer-Based Testing) centre, and dedicated study rooms to accommodate both individual and group learning. These amenities are tailored to meet the diverse needs of students, whether they are preparing for exams, collaborating on projects, or engaging in self-directed study.
A Hybrid Model for Modern Learners
The launch of this physical hub reinforces Miva’s blended learning model, which marries the convenience of online education with the structure and support of in-person resources. By offering students a hybrid pathway, Miva aims to eliminate the barriers traditionally associated with distance learning.
The university also hinted at plans to replicate this model in other regions, positioning the Lagos centre as the first of several strategic expansions designed to bring higher education closer to students across Nigeria.
“The Lagos Study Centre is just the beginning of a new era in student-focused education,” the university noted in its statement.
As Nigeria’s education sector continues to evolve, Miva Open University’s approach reflects a growing shift toward adaptive learning systems that prioritize accessibility, technology, and student well-being.
