Patrik Schick gave Leverkusen an early advantage with a composed finish, but Carlo Boukhalfa struck a late equalizer in the 78th minute to frustrate the reigning champions and dent their fading title hopes.
The result, combined with Bayern’s commanding 4-0 victory over Heidenheim on Saturday, means the Munich giants could seal the title next weekend. If Bayern beats Mainz and Leverkusen fails to win against Augsburg, the title will return to Bavaria.
Last season, Leverkusen made history by completing an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign en route to their first-ever league title — also going undefeated in the German Cup. But the challenge of repeating such a feat has proven steep, especially as Bayern have regained form.
Dortmund Recover with Win After Champions League Exit
Borussia Dortmund responded to their Champions League disappointment with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach in a rollercoaster encounter at Signal Iduna Park.
After falling behind to a Ko Itakura goal, Dortmund stormed back with a flurry of goals just before halftime. Serhou Guirassy, fresh from a Champions League hat trick against Barcelona, leveled in the 41st minute from a Pascal Gross assist. Felix Nmecha quickly followed with a goal off Yan Couto’s cross, and Daniel Svensson added a third in stoppage time with a looping header after Guirassy’s initial effort was saved.
Gladbach pulled one back in the second half through a penalty converted by Kevin Stoger, but Dortmund held on for a morale-boosting win.
Notably, on-loan Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka made a strong return from injury, playing a crucial role in the buildup to all three of Dortmund’s goals.
Augsburg and Frankfurt Share the Spoils in Stalemate
In a clash with European qualification implications, Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt played out a goalless draw — but the scoreline belied the drama on the pitch.
The moment of the match came in stoppage time when Augsburg defender Cédric Zesiger made a heroic sliding block to deny Ansgar Knauff what looked to be a certain winner after the Frankfurt forward had rounded the goalkeeper.
Augsburg nearly stole all three points minutes later, but Kevin Trapp produced a sharp save to deny Phillip Tietz.
The result did little to help either side’s European ambitions. Frankfurt remains third but has struggled for consistency, winning just four of 12 league matches since Omar Marmoush’s January departure to Manchester City. Augsburg, meanwhile, sits 10th in a crowded mid-table race for the Bundesliga’s lower-tier European spots.
With four rounds to go, the Bundesliga remains full of subplots — from Bayern’s march toward reclaiming the crown, to the intense battle for European places, and the continued unpredictability that defines Germany’s top flight.
