The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial press briefing marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
According to Osiyemi, the initiative will be implemented by the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA), which is responsible for the design and production of number plates across the state.
"This new category of number plates will help identify and support persons with disabilities in Lagos, allowing for better enforcement of privileges and policies targeted at improving their mobility and access," he said.
Beyond the PWD-focused initiative, the LSNPPA has also been actively producing and managing a wide range of number plates. During the briefing, Osiyemi revealed that the agency had produced:
- 716 customised fancy motor vehicle plates
- 347 fancy motorcycle plates
- 224 out-of-series number plates for special or unique numbering
- 11,152 standard number plate replacements
- 212 motorcycle plate replacements
- 63 standard fancy plate replacements
- 428 official number plates
- 1,510 dealer plates
- 4,000 articulated vehicle plates
Osiyemi also noted the LSNPPA’s partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in developing eco-friendly number plates, as part of the state’s broader ‘Go Green’ initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.
Responding to concerns over the fading of number plates, he reassured the public that high-quality materials are used in production, while cautioning against the use of harsh and corrosive substances when washing vehicles.
“Just as humans have life spans, so do number plates,” he said. “They should be replaced when necessary to ensure continued visibility and accurate identification.”
The planned introduction of PWD-specific plates marks a progressive step in Lagos’ transport policy, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and responsive governance.
