Matthew Benham, the owner of Premier League club Brentford, has taken another strategic step in expanding his influence in global football through the acquisition of Spanish third-division side Mérida AD.

Brentford announced on Tuesday that its parent company, Best Intentions Analytics, has successfully acquired 100% ownership of the Extremadura-based club, which was established just 12 years ago. Mérida currently competes in Spain's Primera Federación (third tier) and remains in contention for promotion to the Segunda División.

This latest acquisition reflects a growing trend in football—multi-club ownership models—where strategic investments are made to foster talent development, data-sharing, and long-term sustainability across affiliated teams.

Benham, a former hedge fund manager known for his sharp analytical mind and innovative use of data in sports betting, has carved out a unique niche in football management. Under his leadership, Brentford has become synonymous with a data-driven, efficiency-focused approach to scouting and player development. That philosophy paid dividends when the club earned promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and has since established itself as a competitive force.

While Benham was previously the majority owner of Danish side FC Midtjylland—one of the early success stories in multi-club ownership—he sold his stake in 2023. The acquisition of Mérida signals a renewed commitment to building a broader footballing network, likely with an eye on player development and scouting in the Spanish market.

As Mérida looks to climb the ranks of Spanish football, the backing of a Premier League owner with a proven track record offers fresh hope for the club’s future, and further strengthens Brentford’s position in the evolving global football ecosystem.
