The Nigerian gospel music community is in mourning following the death of renowned gospel singer and ordained pastor, Bolaji Adedotun Olanrewaju — fondly known as Big Bolaji or “Big B.” The revered minister passed away on Easter Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the age of 50, following a brief illness.

His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, describing him as “a cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church community and the music industry.” The statement continued, “His departure leaves a void in our hearts that cannot be filled. Bolaji’s life was a testament to his passion for music, his unwavering faith, and his dedication to uplifting those around him.”

A Life Devoted to Ministry and Music

Born in Gbongan, Osun State, and raised in the city of Ibadan, Big Bolaji was more than a gospel singer — he was a cultural and spiritual force. A dynamic worship leader, he was known for his vibrant praise sessions, humor-filled ministration, and his signature blend of Yoruba musical influences with contemporary gospel.

Ordained as a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Big Bolaji’s ministry extended far beyond the pulpit. He founded the widely celebrated “Turn It Up with Big Bolaji,” an annual praise concert in Ibadan that evolved from his popular gospel radio program. He also played a key leadership role in the Living Spring Music Festival, one of Nigeria’s longest-running gospel music gatherings.

In a testament to his versatility, Big Bolaji was also a certified estate surveyor, skillfully balancing his professional career with his spiritual calling. He met his wife, Tolulope, during his academic journey, and the couple, married since 2005, built a loving home and were blessed with children.

A Mentor and Voice of Encouragement

Even in his final years, Big Bolaji remained a pillar of the gospel music scene. His recent role as a judge on the Gospel Icons Africa reality show allowed him to mentor up-and-coming gospel artists, further cementing his legacy as a nurturer of talent and a promoter of excellence in Christian music.

Tributes have flooded social media since news of his passing broke. Gospel legend Chioma Jesus remembered him as “a vessel and a light,” while popular comedian and gospel performer Woli Agba, grieving the loss of two close friends in just two days, expressed deep sorrow over Big Bolaji’s passing.

A Legacy That Endures

While funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, the family has asked for privacy during this painful period as they prepare to honor and celebrate a man whose life was marked by joy, service, and unwavering faith.

Big Bolaji leaves behind a powerful legacy — not only in songs and sermons but in lives touched, faith rekindled, and hearts lifted through his unique gift of praise. He may have departed, but his voice will echo for generations.
