In a move set to make National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) history, Bay FC will face off against the Washington Spirit at Oracle Park on August 23 — marking the first-ever professional women’s soccer match to be played at the iconic San Francisco ballpark.
Oracle Park, famously home to Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, will transform into a soccer venue for the groundbreaking event. Bay FC aims to draw over 40,000 fans, which would break the current NWSL attendance record of 35,038, set last year when the team played against the Chicago Red Stars at Wrigley Field.
“We’re eager for the opportunity to create league history alongside the Washington Spirit by being the first professional women’s teams to play at Oracle Park,” said Bay FC CEO Brady Stewart in a statement Tuesday. “Playing a match in San Francisco allows us to connect with our fans from around the Bay Area in an incredible setting.”
While Bay FC typically plays home games at PayPal Park in San Jose, the one-off match in San Francisco is seen as a chance to deepen their regional footprint and expand fan engagement in Northern California.
Stephen Revetria, president of Giants Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the event: “Oracle Park has long been home to iconic events across sports and entertainment, and we’re proud to host our first-ever women’s professional soccer match this summer.”
He added that the match represents a significant milestone for both the stadium and the broader Bay Area sports community.
The highly anticipated showdown between Bay FC and Washington Spirit will also be broadcast nationally on CBS, ensuring fans across the country can witness this historic moment in U.S. women’s soccer.
