The encounter (11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8), a rematch of their recent ITTF African Cup clash, was a tense affair marked by momentum shifts. Aruna, ranked 20th globally, needed to draw on his experience to fend off a spirited challenge from Salifou, particularly holding his nerve in critical moments.
"It is always tough to play the first match in these events,” Aruna commented post-match. “Getting a 2-0 lead gave me some confidence. He came back strongly in the third and fourth games, but I stayed calm and held on. I am really happy and satisfied with my performance.”
The Nigerian star faced a crucial test in the fourth game when Salifou surged to an 8-6 lead. However, Aruna rallied effectively, winning the final five points to secure the vital opening win in the revamped World Cup group stage format.
Despite the loss, Salifou, who was notably making only his second appearance for Benin following a five-year break from international competition, demonstrated considerable skill and determination. “I had chances to draw level. I was leading 8-6 in the fourth, but credit to Aruna for fighting back,” Salifou remarked. “I will keep giving my best and focus on the next match.”
It was also a positive start for Egypt's leading players. Hana Goda, currently Africa's top-ranked female player and fresh from winning the ITTF African Cup, delivered a commanding performance. She sailed past Malaysia’s Seak Hui Li with a convincing 4-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-4, 11-8) victory, never allowing her opponent to gain a foothold.
Compatriot Dina Meshref, competing in her eighth World Cup, showcased her experience with a solid 3-1 (11-9, 11-9, 11-5, 6-11) win against Zhu Chengzhu.
Other notable results from day one included dominant straight-set victories for Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka, Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar, and China’s Huang Youzheng. The day's main surprise came as Eugene Wang secured a 2-2 draw against the higher-ranked Yukiya Uda of Japan.
The opening day wins provide a crucial platform for Aruna, Goda, and Meshref as they aim to progress from the group stages in the prestigious Macao tournament.
