Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo Nazário has withdrawn his bid to become president of the Brazil Football Confederation (CBF), citing a lack of support from local soccer executives. The two-time World Cup winner announced his decision on Wednesday, acknowledging that incumbent Ednaldo Rodrigues enjoys strong backing among state federations.

Ronaldo, 48, had declared his candidacy in December, aiming to challenge Rodrigues, whose leadership has faced criticism from fans and former players. However, the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid star failed to secure the support of at least four state federations required to run for the position.

“The federations refused to meet with me, stating they were satisfied with the current management and supported Rodrigues’ re-election,” Ronaldo said in a social media post. “I was unable to present my project, share my ideas, or engage in dialogue. It’s clear there’s no path forward for my candidacy. I respect their decision, even if it differs from my beliefs.”

Rodrigues’ presidency has been contentious, marked by a legal dispute that briefly removed him from office in December 2023. A Rio de Janeiro court ruled that irregularities had occurred during his 2022 election, but Brazil’s Supreme Court overturned the decision a month later. The case prompted FIFA and CONMEBOL to threaten Brazil with suspension from international competitions, citing concerns over judicial interference in the CBF.

During Rodrigues’ brief suspension, his high-profile attempt to appoint Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti as Brazil’s national team manager fell through. Ancelotti instead extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2026, leading Rodrigues to appoint Dorival Jr. as head coach.

Under Dorival Jr., Brazil currently sits fifth in South American World Cup qualifying with 18 points after 12 matches. The top six teams in the region will secure automatic berths for the 2026 World Cup.

Rodrigues first assumed the CBF presidency on an interim basis in 2021. His re-election campaign now appears unchallenged, as Ronaldo steps aside from the race.
