In a recent episode of the Me & My Girls podcast, Bambam recounted the life-threatening complications she faced while giving birth to her first child, Zendaya, in 2020. The former Big Brother Naija star revealed that the ordeal nearly resulted in a stillbirth.
“During my first labor, my kidney failed, my heart was weak, my liver… everything was just shutting down because of childbirth. She [my daughter] had detached from the placenta. If I was a second late [to the hospital], she would have lost oxygen, and I would have had a stillbirth,” Bambam shared.
A Call to Address Medical Negligence
Bambam also highlighted the issue of medical negligence, emphasizing that many stillbirths are preventable with proper healthcare.
“A lot of stillbirths are due to negligence. It’s either the doctor was not sound, the nurse didn’t do her job on time, or they arrived at the hospital late,” she said.
Her experience sheds light on the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare systems to ensure the safety of mothers and their babies during childbirth.
Overcoming Trauma Through Therapy
The traumatic experience left Bambam haunted by lingering “what ifs,” which tormented her for a long time. To cope with the emotional aftermath, she sought therapy, which helped her shift her focus from fear to gratitude.
“Therapy helped me focus on being grateful rather than dwelling on the fear of what could have happened,” she admitted.
Bambam’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of mothers and the importance of mental health support in overcoming life’s most challenging moments.
A Message of Strength and Hope
By sharing her story, Bambam not only raises awareness about the risks of childbirth but also inspires others to seek help and prioritize their mental well-being. Her courage in speaking out serves as a beacon of hope for women facing similar challenges.
