Victor Ikpeba, a former Nigerian international, has called on his fellow ex-players to lend their support to Eric Chelle in his role as the new coach of the Super Eagles.

Ikpeba expressed concern over the insufficient backing from former internationals for previous coaches, especially during player-related conflicts.

In a discussion on Brila FM, he emphasized the need for solidarity and encouragement for Eric Chelle, while also pointing out the lack of response from some former players during previous controversies.

He said, “Let us rally around the manager and players. If we win the 2 games in March, we are back in contention for the World Cup.

“When Finidi was head coach, how many of these ex-internationals came out to support him and speak for him when there were issues with players.”

“This is not about [the] manager. He is what we have now and we will support him,” he concluded.

Chelle has been assigned the responsibility of ensuring Nigeria qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles have encountered a challenging beginning to their qualifying campaign, recording 1-1 draws against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, in addition to suffering a 2-1 loss to the Republic of Benin.

At present, Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin are at the top of the group, each with seven points, while Lesotho has accumulated five points, leaving Nigeria in a difficult position with only three points.

The Super Eagles will continue their World Cup qualifying efforts in March, starting with an away match against Rwanda in Kigali, followed by a home game against Zimbabwe shortly thereafter.
