The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) will release its 2025 seasonal climate prediction on February 4th.
The focus for this year is ‘The Role of Early Warnings in Fostering a Climate-Resilient Aviation Sector for Sustainable Socio-Economic Growth’.
On February 4, 2025, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) will unveil the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) to the public.
Each year, NiMet forecasts and disseminates anticipated annual trends in climatic factors such as rainfall and temperature in Nigeria during the first quarter.
This initiative aligns with its responsibility to provide guidance to the Government and the public on various weather, climate, and water-related issues.
According to the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike; “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management etc”.
“The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication”, Professor Anosike concluded.
The SCP document provides essential forecast information, including the start and end dates of the 2025 rainy season, the duration of the cropping season, the anticipated total rainfall across all 774 Local Government Areas in the country, temperature projections for January to May, and alerts for Malaria and Meningitis.
This Seasonal Climate Prediction document serves as a national resource, and its public presentation draws attendees from various sectors, including public and private entities, development partners, non-governmental organizations, the diplomatic community, and farmers' associations.
The presentation will be conducted by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, who will also summarize the publication for policymakers and provide translations in three major Nigerian languages, along with an overview of the climate situation in Nigeria.
