Nigerians have been plunged into darkness following a collapse of the national grid on Saturday, January 11, 2024, marking the first such incident of the year.

Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) indicates that the failure occurred at 1:56 pm.

This event is part of a troubling trend, as the grid has experienced approximately 12 consecutive collapses in 2024 alone.

The specific reasons behind this latest failure have not yet been revealed.

The widespread power outage on Saturday afternoon has raised alarms among Nigerians regarding the stability of the national grid.

The outage, which took place at 1:56 pm, prompted many to voice their concerns about the condition of the country's power infrastructure on social media platforms.

“The way this light went off ehn, hope it’s not National Grid? Who get light right now?” @lollypeezle tweeted.

Another user, @Mrlekan213, added, “National grid done fall again?”

While @47kasz said, “Abeg who get light right now??? Abi it’s national grid.”

Despite the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) not reporting a grid collapse, the power outage has prompted renewed discussion regarding the dependability of Nigeria's power infrastructure. This incident highlights the grid's vulnerability, given the twelve collapses experienced in 2024.
