Prominent actor and filmmaker Lateef Adedimeji has voiced his concerns about the increasing trend of actors accepting roles without pay, arguing that it diminishes the integrity of the industry and discourages professionals.

In a conversation with The Nation, Adedimeji responded to a recent social media outburst from a fellow actor regarding this issue. He stressed that he does not pursue unpaid work or engage in projects that do not offer compensation.

“I’m not a fan of such, I don’t do it, and I don’t think I’ll ever do it no matter what,” Adedimeji stated firmly. “I may not be able to pay someone as much as they expect, but not paying at all is something I will never do and would never advise anyone to do.”

The actor elaborated on the detrimental effects of unpaid positions within the entertainment sector. He stated that the absence of financial incentives hampers creativity and hinders the growth of talent.

“It will definitely affect the industry,” he said. “You’re killing the motivation. Everyone with a talent that works needs to be encouraged, and money is that motivation. It assures the individual that if they keep improving, there is financial reward for their effort.”
