The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has conducted training for its aviation security personnel and representatives from relevant security agencies stationed at the airport, focusing on Man-Portable Air-Defence Systems (MANPADS).

This training program, which lasted for two weeks, took place at the NCAA's corporate headquarters in Abuja.

The Authority emphasized the necessity of this training, noting that MANPADS are lightweight anti-aircraft weapons that pose an increasing threat to global aviation.

Capt. Chris Najomo, the Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, stated that the participants have gained essential skills to address the risks associated with MANPADS, which endanger both military and civilian aviation.

He highlighted that by implementing effective mitigation strategies, Nigeria can avert severe repercussions for both its national economy and the global economy.

Capt. Najomo also mentioned that the inclusion of diverse organizations in the training was intentional, aimed at promoting interagency collaboration and cooperation towards a unified objective.

“We must collaborate to ensure the safety of our aviation sector,” he asserted.

Dr. Omogo Bernard Onwe Chinedu, the Director of Aviation Security at NCAA, praised Capt. Najomo for recognizing and addressing the gaps in aviation security, thereby enhancing safety measures in Nigeria.

The training course, titled ‘Reducing Vulnerabilities to MANPADS and Stand-off Weapons,’ was facilitated by the French Civil Aviation Authority.
