Prominent Nigerian film director Andy Boyo recounted an intriguing experience of being expelled from school due to his profound admiration for the iconic Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

In an exclusive interview, Boyo, an influential member of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), disclosed that his enthusiasm for Fela’s music prompted him to secretly leave Glorious College in Ibadan to attend a Fela concert at the University of Ibadan’s “Havana Night.”

His act of defiance, however, led to significant repercussions: “Fela has always been my passion. I was expelled from Glorious College for sneaking out to see him perform. Upon my return, I faced expulsion from school,” Boyo recounted.

Despite this obstacle, his admiration for Fela remained unwavering, and it is this fervor that has inspired Boyo’s latest endeavor: a highly anticipated biographical film about the Afrobeats icon.

After three years of careful planning, Boyo has obtained the rights to Fela’s music and is preparing to begin production in 2025.

The film will be shot in Nigeria, the UK, and the US, featuring a diverse cast to vividly portray this legendary narrative.

There are rumors that the film will include 27 actresses to represent Fela’s many wives, showcasing his intricate and varied relationships.

Boyo, known for his previous successful projects like Untamed and Spirit of Assassins, will take on the roles of director, writer, and producer for this film.

He described the project as a “labour of love,” emphasizing his profound respect for Fela, whom he considers a mentor and a significant influence in the music world.

“This film will chronicle the battles, victories, and the extraordinary life of Fela, the ruler of Afrobeats,” Boyo said.
