South African artist Tyla made a significant impression at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) held in Manchester, England, where she won three esteemed awards: Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act. The event also featured Taylor Swift as one of the evening's standout winners.

During her performance at Manchester’s Co-op Live, Tyla captivated the audience with her viral hit "Water," accompanied by a dynamic group of dancers. She also introduced her energetic new track "Push 2 Start." Nominated in four categories, including Best New Act, Tyla's three wins further established her as an emerging talent on the global music stage.

She surpassed notable artists such as Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Diamond Platnumz, and TitoM & Yuppe.

In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed gratitude towards Afrobeats, stating, “Thank you to Afrobeats, it has opened many doors for African music.”

This acknowledgment of Afrobeats follows her earlier victory at the 2024 VMAs, where she celebrated her Amapiano heritage with her hit single “Water,” which also incorporates Afrobeats elements.

Tyla has notably surpassed prominent Nigerian musicians like Asake, Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Tems at both the VMAs and EMAs.

Taylor Swift dominated the evening, taking home awards for Best Artist, Best Live Act, Best US Act, and Best Video.

The ceremony was hosted by British singer Rita Ora, who paid a touching tribute to former One Direction member Liam Payne, who sadly passed away on October 16, 2024, after a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Ora, who shared a close bond with Payne and collaborated with him on the 2018 song "For You" from *Fifty Shades Freed*, conveyed her deep sadness to the audience.

"I want to take a moment to remember someone. Liam Payne was one of the kindest people I knew," she said, her voice breaking. She continued, “He had the biggest heart, and he left such a mark on this world"

The evening celebrated hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes, who received the EMA Global Icon Award, presented by British rapper Little Simz. During his acceptance speech, Busta Rhymes looked back on his career, stating, "In 34 years of professionally recording, this is my first award from MTV, and it feels incredible."
