U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Set to Compete Against the United States in Quarterfinals Following Victory Over the Dominican Republic.
Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, known as the Flamingos, secured a victory against the host nation, the Dominican Republic, early Wednesday morning, ensuring a perfect record in the group stage of the ongoing 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The breakthrough came in the 89th minute when midfielder Shakirat Moshood seized the opportunity from 25 yards out, delivering a powerful left-footed shot that eluded the Dominican goalkeeper. This goal marked Moshood's fourth of the tournament and solidified Nigeria's defense as they prepared for a quarter-final match against the United States.
With three consecutive wins in the group phase, Nigeria is set for a rematch against the USA, following their previous quarter-final encounter in India 2022, where Nigeria triumphed in a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic concluded the group stage with just one point but gained numerous admirers and renewed hope for the future.
In his post-match comments, Nigeria’s head coach, Bankole Olowookere, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I’m so happy, I’m happy for myself, happy for the team and happy for the whole of Nigeria. We knew in this match we had to manage our energy and strength; these are young girls with many games to play so we had to take it easy.”
