Thomas Tuchel is poised to be appointed as the new manager of the England national team after reaching an agreement with the Football Association, as reported by The Times on Tuesday.

The 51-year-old has been without a managerial role since departing Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the last season. If confirmed, Tuchel will be only the third foreign manager to lead the Three Lions, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Sky Sports has indicated that Tuchel is the frontrunner to succeed Gareth Southgate in the long term.

While the FA has refrained from commenting on these developments, they have announced that CEO Mark Bullingham will provide further information on Wednesday at Wembley Stadium.

Tuchel aligns with the criteria of a "world-class coach who has won trophies," as described by England's interim manager Lee Carsley after the team's 3-1 victory over Finland in the Nations League.

His managerial experience includes stints at several top European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, but his most notable achievement came during his tenure at Chelsea, where he guided the team to Champions League success shortly after taking over in 2021, along with winning the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

He was dismissed in September 2022 in a controversial decision by Chelsea's new ownership, which ultimately did not yield positive results.

Just six months later, he took the helm at Bayern Munich, leading them to an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

However, his time at Bayern was marked by a disappointing season, as the club experienced its first trophyless campaign in 12 years.

Carsley has been serving as the interim manager since August, following Southgate's resignation after the Euro 2024 final.

The 50-year-old, who was previously the under-21s manager, has expressed mixed feelings about wanting the position permanently.

His candidacy was further weakened by a recent 2-1 defeat to Greece in the Nations League, and he has supported the notion of hiring a foreign coach if they are deemed the right fit.

“We’ve seen in the past that we’ve had different nationalities coach the team. The best candidate should get the job,” said Carsley.

“I think we’d be putting ourselves in a corner if we didn’t, and we didn’t open our minds a bit.”

Tuchel will take over a highly skilled group of players, featuring talents like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Cole Palmer, positioning them as strong contenders for the 2026 World Cup.

Southgate guided the Three Lions to consecutive finals in the Euros, along with a semi-final and quarter-final appearance in his four major tournaments as manager.

However, England has not secured a major tournament victory since the 1966 World Cup.
