Activist Deji Adeyanju has announced the release of singer and social media personality Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, from the custody of the Nigeria police's Intelligence Response Team.

In a statement shared late Tuesday via his Twitter account, Adeyanju, under the handle #adeyanjudeji, confirmed that Speed Darlington, also referred to as Akpi, has been released.

Adeyanju, who is also a practicing lawyer, praised the contributions of fellow activist Omoyele Sowore and legal representative Stan Alieke for their roles in securing Speed Darlington’s freedom.

“Special appreciation to #YeleSowore, super reliable senior lawyer #stanalieke, and to all Nigerians for raising their voice for Speed Darlington. Must also appreciate Prof Sanusi and his team at IRT ”or the professionalism today,” the tweet stated.

Adeyanju previously disclosed that Speed Darlington was apprehended in Lagos State last Friday and later transferred to Abuja, where he had been held in detention. He indicated that the arrest stemmed from a formal complaint made by Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy, although he did not provide specifics regarding the complaint.

“We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos Friday last week, moved around and eventually brought to Abuja and has been in detention since then. Petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm,” Adeyanju tweeted on Tuesday.
