Panathinaikos defender George Baldock, a former international player for Greece and a veteran of seven seasons with Sheffield United, has tragically been found deceased at his residence in Athens, according to reports from Greek media. He was 31 years old.

State-run ERT television reported that Baldock's body was discovered late Wednesday in the swimming pool of his home located in the southern suburb of Glyfada. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear at this time.

Born in Britain, Baldock received his call-up to the Greek national team in 2022, participating in 12 matches, with his last appearance occurring in March during Greece's penalty shootout defeat to Georgia in the Euro 2024 playoffs.

He was not included in Greece's lineup for the UEFA Nations League match against England scheduled for Thursday.

Baldock joined Sheffield United in 2017, playing a pivotal role in the club's promotion to the Premier League on two occasions, in 2019 and 2023. He signed with Panathinaikos in May on a three-year deal after Sheffield United faced relegation to the EFL Championship.

“Sheffield United Football Club is deeply shocked and saddened by the news of George Baldock's passing,” the club expressed on social media. “The defender departed the club this summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was highly regarded by fans, staff, and teammates alike.”
