Unveiled on Friday at the 39th Festival d’Hyères, a prominent French fashion and photography event, the new CLA retains the overall silhouette of its concept but appears less streamlined and more grounded over its wheels than initially suggested.
The grille is obscured except for the prominent three-pointed star emblem, and there is a design that allows for airflow through the lower front bumper. The final LED headlights are visible, and the front design features the chin-forward aesthetic seen in the concept.
The vehicle is equipped with appropriately sized wheels, adorned with “d’Hyères,” that fill the wheel arches, and it includes pop-out door handles, a common feature in many current Mercedes models. Both rear sides seem to house either a fuel door, an electric charging port, or possibly a deceptive flap. Mercedes has not clarified whether this version of the CLA is electric or gasoline-powered.What is confirmed is that Mercedes intends to offer both electric and hybrid options for the next-gen CLA, supported by its Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA). While the dual flaps might initially imply a plug-in hybrid, it’s plausible that Mercedes is employing a bit of misdirection. The absence of a front grille opening and the lack of visible exhaust could just as easily indicate a fully electric vehicle.
The rear design is generally rounded, and if an exhaust exists, it is positioned downward behind the rear bumper. The trunk lid features a spoiler that disrupts the smooth lines, and the full-width rear taillight is expected to make a bold statement once the camouflage is removed.
The CLA appears to be nearing production, and with Mercedes teasing its final design, we can anticipate an undisguised reveal soon.
