To tackle mental health issues within the State, the Lagos State government has launched a new mental health helpline: the Lagos Lifeline Smart Number: 0700 000 MIND (0700 000 6463).

This initiative complements the existing Lagos Lifeline Number: 090 9000 MIND (090 90006463). The announcement was made during the “Lift Up Hope” event, which celebrated this year’s World Mental Day, aimed at raising awareness about mental health challenges and providing support for those in need.

During the event, the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, underscored the significance of mental health in our rapidly evolving society. She expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health for their ongoing efforts in addressing mental health concerns and urged the public to prioritize mental health alongside physical well-being.

Additionally, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, discussed the influence of workplace environments on mental health. She expressed concern over the stigma associated with mental health issues and emphasized the necessity for a cultural transformation that recognizes seeking help as a sign of strength rather than weakness.

Ogunyemi also introduced the new mental health helpline and reaffirmed the State government’s dedication to mental health initiatives, including the Lagos State Wellness Centre (LASWELL). She stressed the importance of mental resilience in the workplace and encouraged employers to actively support their employees' mental health.

Furthermore, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, reiterated the critical role of mental health in the workplace and highlighted the ministry’s various initiatives aimed at promoting mental health. He mentioned the LagosMiND project, which has played a vital role in enhancing access to mental health services.

Dr. Tolu Ajomale, the Head of Special Projects and Mental Health, shared valuable insights regarding the creation and implementation of the mental health hotline. He noted that the hotline was established following comprehensive research, which included valuable lessons gleaned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event included a ceremonial release of green balloons, representing hope and resilience in addressing mental health challenges. Participants were invited to take part in this symbolic act as a way to demonstrate their dedication to reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.

The “Lift Up Hope” event marked a pivotal moment in advancing mental health awareness in Lagos State, underscoring the essential need to support the mental well-being of both individuals and communities.
