Gareth Southgate, the former England coach, received applause following England's victory over Wales in the Group B match of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, held at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al-Rayyan, west of Doha, on November 29, 2022.

On Thursday, Southgate announced that he would not be returning to coaching for at least the next year. He stepped down after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July.

Despite speculation linking him to the managerial position at Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag is currently facing challenges, Southgate confirmed his decision.

“I won’t coach in the next year for sure, I’m certain of that,” Southgate stated, as reported by the BBC during the European Club Association general assembly in Athens.

The 54-year-old, who previously managed Middlesbrough and the England Under-21 team, has a strong rapport with Dan Ashworth, Manchester United’s new sporting director, who was involved in Southgate's appointment as England manager when he served as the Football Association's technical director.

“I need to give myself time to make good decisions. After stepping away from such a significant role, it’s important to allow both my body and mind to rest. I’m enjoying my life, so there’s no urgency. I’m fortunate to have many opportunities coming my way.”
