Effective November 1, 2024, Air Peace will be adjusting its fare structure for one-way flights from Lagos to Abuja to N200,000. This decision has been made in response to the challenging economic climate and its impact on the aviation industry.
As a result, some Nigerian travelers may opt for road travel as an alternative to air travel.
Recent inquiries by our correspondent revealed that Air Peace has set its one-way fare between Lagos and Abuja at N200,000, making it the highest among domestic airlines.
In comparison, Aero is charging between N94,000 and N109,000; Arik Air's fares range from N104,405 to N139,292; and Ibom Air's prices vary from N124,000 to over N133,000.
The surge in airfares has left many passengers stranded at airports, unable to secure flights to their intended destinations.
The most frequented routes, Lagos-Abuja and Abuja-Lagos, are particularly affected, with many travelers struggling to find available seats.
An Air Peace representative, who requested anonymity, confirmed the fare increase, attributing it to Nigeria's deteriorating economic conditions.
"When you purchase a ticket and review the breakdown, you'll see that we are suffering as an airline, and the costs of operating the business are becoming increasingly unmanageable.
"All these burdensome taxes are directed to the government, leaving airlines with no alternative but to adjust fares accordingly; it is simply the reality we face."
A frequent air traveler, Mr. Adeleke Aina, voiced his concerns regarding the escalating airfares. He expressed his frustration, stating that the continuous rise in airfares without any apparent justification beyond economic factors may compel him to shift to road transportation for his travel needs.
The current situation is having a detrimental impact on various aspects, and the fuel situation has become concerning. It appears that the Federal authorities are not adequately addressing this anomaly, which raises concerns about the future of our nation.
