The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Nigeria has initiated talks with Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) regarding the hosting of four television channels on the NigComSat-1R satellite.

This development comes after a recent visit to the NIGCOMSAT Ground Control Station, during which Mohammed Alsahabi, the Head of Media from Saudi Arabia, engaged with Abiodun Attah, the Executive Director of Technical Services, who was representing CEO Jane Egerton-Idehen.

This initiative represents a significant advancement in promoting media diversity and accessibility in Nigeria, opening doors for further international partnerships within the telecommunications industry.

Our correspondent reports that a delegation from the Saudi Arabian Embassy recently visited NigComSat to finalize the arrangements following a thorough inspection of its facilities.

The delegation, led by Mohammed Alsahabi, Head of the media team at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, was received by Abiodun Attah, Executive Director of Technical Services at NigComSat, who represented Managing Director Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen.

NigComSat indicated that discussions regarding the collaboration with Saudi Arabian authorities have progressed significantly.

“The meeting highlighted the dedication of both parties to enhance media cooperation and broaden broadcasting capabilities through cutting-edge satellite technology.

“The planned hosting of the four television channels on NigComSat-1R is anticipated to improve access to a variety of content for audiences in Nigeria and beyond, while also reinforcing cultural connections between Saudi Arabia and Nigeria,” stated Aisha Bantam, NigComSat’s Head of Corporate Affairs, in Abuja yesterday.

The representative indicated that Alsahabi conveyed the Saudi Arabian Embassy's eagerness to utilize NigComSat’s advanced satellite infrastructure for the provision of high-quality programming.

“There exists a profound historical bond between the peoples of Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, encompassing cultural and religious ties, among others. Regrettably, Saudi Arabia is predominantly recognized for Hajj,” Alsahabi remarked.

Mrs. Egerton-Idehen emphasized NigComSat’s dedication to cultivating partnerships that improve communication and connectivity throughout Africa.

She pointed out that the inclusion of international channels on NigComSat-1R is in line with its ambition to become a premier satellite service provider in the region.

According to The Nation, this collaboration is anticipated to enhance not only the broadcasting landscape but also contribute to the economic development of Nigeria’s media industry.

“By leveraging NigComSat-1R, the Saudi Arabian channels will benefit from a robust platform that guarantees dependable transmission and extensive coverage.

“Both parties have agreed to continue their discussions to finalize the technical and operational details of the partnership, with the goal of launching the channels at the earliest opportunity,” stated Bantam, the spokesperson for NigComSat.
