Nigerian artist Divine Ikubor, known as Rema, has asserted that the recent introduction of an Afrobeats category at various international awards is a direct consequence of the success of his popular track ‘Calm Down.’

During his appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ Rema emphasized that he stands alongside Afrobeats luminaries such as Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

“I don’t want to position myself as an Afrobeats Messiah. I sometimes wish the veterans would acknowledge it, but since no one is doing so, I may have to take that step myself,” he stated.

“I have great respect for the veterans, but I consider myself one of the Big 4… The establishment of an Afrobeats category by major award shows is a testament to how my song has paved the way.”

It is worth noting that the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a Best Afrobeats Song category last year, with Rema’s ‘Calm Down Remix’ featuring Selena Gomez taking home the inaugural award.
