The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has sanctioned the suspension of Prof. Biodun Adewuya, the Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), due to allegations of insubordination, unauthorized sharing of confidential information, actions detrimental to the university's and state's security, divided loyalty, and inappropriate conduct for a public official.
According to a memo referenced as LASU/ASE/PF/3394, dated
August 30, 2024, these actions are classified as serious misconduct and breach
the university's regulations outlined in Chapter 3, Sections 3.6 and 3.8
(3.8.1) of the Conditions of Service for Senior Staff (September 2017).
On Sunday, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the Head of
Information and Public Relations, announced that Prof. Olufemi Idowu has been
appointed as the acting provost.
Before the suspension, Prof. Adewuya received two separate
queries regarding the allegations, to which he responded. However, the Vice
Chancellor found these responses to be inadequate and has referred the matter
to the Joint Council-Senate Disciplinary Committee for further examination.
The suspension of Prof. Adewuya is effective from September
3, 2024, and will initially last for three months, during which he will be
relieved of all official responsibilities as a staff member of Lagos State
University and as Provost of LASUCOM, in accordance with Chapter 3, Section
3.9.7 (e) of the University’s Conditions of Service for Senior Staff.
In the meantime, Prof. Olufemi Emmanuel Idowu, the Deputy
Provost of LASUCOM, has been appointed as Acting Provost, effective September
3, 2024. Prof. Idowu, from the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical
Sciences, will fulfill this role until the Joint Council-Senate Disciplinary
(Academic) Committee concludes its investigation regarding Prof. Adewuya.
