Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company has officially unveiled its first electric vehicle produced locally.

Cornel Osigwe, the Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs at IVM, announced this significant milestone on Facebook, emphasizing its importance for the Nigerian automotive landscape.

Osigwe noted that the electric vehicle was crafted at IVM’s advanced production facility located in Nnewi, Anambra State, representing a major leap forward for the nation’s automotive industry.

He remarked, “I just had the opportunity to test-drive the inaugural Innoson electric vehicle produced in Nnewi. This is just the beginning.”

While Osigwe confirmed that this marks IVM’s first venture into electric vehicle manufacturing, he did not provide specifics regarding pricing, production numbers, or the timeline for market availability.

However, he mentioned that the initial batch of IVM electric vehicles has already sold out.

Osigwe stated that following the release of the video, “We have received numerous inquiries and upfront payments from eager clients wanting to be among the first to drive the Innoson Electric Vehicle. My inbox has been inundated with questions about pricing.”

“The initial limited quantity is now completely sold out.”

Electric vehicles are crucial in mitigating carbon emissions from road transport, which contributes to over 15% of global energy-related emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The electric vehicle sector has seen significant growth in recent years, fueled by improvements in range, model diversity, and overall performance.

As of 2023, electric passenger cars account for about 18% of new car sales, indicating their rising popularity and the global transition towards sustainable transportation options.
