Indian authorities are preparing to launch a forensic investigation into the fire that erupted on Saturday at a Tata Electronics factory, which produces components for Apple iPhones, according to a Tamil Nadu state official on Sunday.

Since Sunday was a scheduled holiday for the factory, it is unlikely that state approval for resuming production will be granted by Monday, as indicated by two sources familiar with the situation.

Tata Electronics and Apple have not provided comments outside of regular business hours. Previously, Tata Electronics stated that it was looking into the cause of the fire and would implement measures to protect employees and other stakeholders.

This incident marks the latest in a series of challenges faced by Apple suppliers in India, as the company seeks to diversify its supply chain away from China and views India as a key growth market.

The fire at the facility located in Hosur reportedly started in a section designated for chemical storage, as confirmed by a fire official to Reuters.

The fire has been "completely extinguished," and the release of fumes has ceased, stated district administrative official K.M. Sarayu.

Two workers who were hospitalized are expected to be discharged on Sunday, she added.

"We are now able to proceed with the investigation," Sarayu noted, mentioning that a forensic team from the state capital, Chennai, has been sent to the site.

It remains uncertain whether the fire impacted nearby buildings, one of which is scheduled to begin assembling iPhones by the end of the year.
