The latest airline, Shankh Air, has obtained authorization from the Civil Aviation Ministry to commence operations within the country, representing a crucial step forward in its operational launch, allowing it to seek an airline license from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
According to Chairman Sharvan Kumar Vishwakarma, Shankh Air intends to base at least three of its planned Boeing 737-800NG aircraft in Noida. The airline is eager to initiate operations across various locations, having engaged in extensive discussions with NIA about developing new city connections.
Established in 2023, Shankh Air will be the inaugural scheduled airline to emerge from Uttar Pradesh. The airline's website indicates that hubs in Lucknow and Noida will enhance connectivity to all major cities in India. Additionally, the site features a page encouraging job applications.
The airline is preparing for its launch in the latter half of 2024.
Shankh Air plans to operate as a full-service carrier, offering a two-class service and providing both intra- and inter-state flights.
India's aviation sector is expected to be one of the fastest-growing markets for years to come, which is promising. However, this also means heightened competition, making the market one of the most challenging globally. The timing of this initiative may not be as favorable as that of Akasa.
While Akasa secured MAX aircraft under advantageous conditions with prime delivery slots, Shankh Air is seeking 737NGs, which are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. Generic statements about being customer-focused and delivering exceptional passenger experiences lack substance without the necessary personnel and aircraft.
We extend our best wishes to the airline's team as they embark on this venture. Nonetheless, as our analysis indicates, launching an airline in such a competitive environment is undoubtedly one of the most challenging endeavors.
