Renowned Hollywood actress Maggie Smith, celebrated for her performance in the 'Harry Potter' series, has died at the age of 89. Her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, shared the news in a statement issued early Friday morning.

The statement revealed that the esteemed actress passed away "peacefully" at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

According to the statement, the film star died “peacefully” at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Stephens and Larkin said Smith’s passing left them “devastated and sad” while describing her as an “extraordinary person who is intensely private”.

“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” the statement reads.

“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.

“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Born in Ilford, England, on December 28, 1934, Smith began her acting career in 1952.

Over the course of more than 60 years, she made significant contributions to television, film, and theater.

Smith appeared in over 50 films and received numerous accolades throughout her career, including two Academy Awards, eight BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. In 1967, she married Robert Stephens, but the couple divorced in 1975.

She later wed Alan Beverly Cross, remaining with him until his passing in 1998. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the performing arts, Smith was honored with the title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990.
