The family of the late music legend Onyeka Onwenu laid her to rest yesterday, honoring her wishes for a simple farewell.
Following her unexpected passing on Tuesday, July 30, after collapsing at the 80th birthday celebration of Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Onyeka had previously expressed her desires regarding her memorial and burial.
She requested, “Please do it swiftly, quietly, and privately. Celebrate me with prayers, followed by a lunch or dinner. Share some light-hearted stories about me and enjoy a good laugh.
Make merry and then continue with your lives. If my friends wish to celebrate, let it be while I am still alive so I can partake in the joy, not after I am gone and unaware of it. That is who I am, Onyeka Onwenu,” as she was affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion.’
In accordance with her wishes, the family conducted a funeral service at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at the Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi, Lagos, without any unnecessary fanfare.
The service began with a solemn hymn as the late singer’s body was brought in, carried by pallbearers in traditional Igbo attire, alongside her two sons, Tijani and Abraham Ogunlende. After the service, her body was transported to the Ebony Vaults around 2 PM.
Among the attendees were former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and notable musicians such as Orits Williki and Tee Mac Omatshola-Itseli, along with other distinguished guests.
Onyeka Onwenu was a multifaceted talent, excelling as a musician, broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. Born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, she embarked on her music journey in 1981 while working with the NTA.
Her debut album, "For the Love of You," showcased her pop sensibilities and included an orchestral rendition of Johnny Nash’s "Hold Me Tight," produced by Berkley Jones. Following this, her second album, "Endless Life," was produced by Sonny Okosun. Onwenu gained recognition for her unique vocal style and profound lyrics.
