Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves have been selected as the flagbearers for the United States in the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.

The American Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced on Friday that former gold medalists Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves have been selected as the flagbearers for the United States during the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.

Serio has played a pivotal role in leading the U.S. wheelchair basketball team to gold medals at both the 2016 and 2020 Paralympic Games. A five-time world champion, he serves as co-captain of the 2024 team alongside Trevon Jenifer.

“I’m truly honored and overwhelmed,” Serio expressed. “I never imagined I would have the opportunity to experience this in my career. I want to extend my gratitude to all the athletes representing Team USA.”

Nieves contributed to Team USA's historic first gold medal in sitting volleyball at the 2016 Games.

“Being named the flagbearer for Team USA signifies that all my efforts have been worthwhile,” Nieves stated. “I have the privilege of representing the nation that shaped me, alongside the finest athletes in the U.S.”

The opening ceremony for the Paris Paralympics is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées.

The selection of the flagbearers was determined through a vote by fellow American Paralympic athletes. The U.S. delegation consists of 225 athletes and guides.
