Mauricio Pochettino has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team, according to several reliable sources on Thursday.
The Athletic and ESPN reported that confidential sources
confirmed Pochettino, who recently parted ways with Chelsea Football Club in
the English Premier League in May, will succeed Gregg Berhalter as the team's
manager.
Pochettino, aged 52, will join the United States team as
they prepare to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada.
Pochettino’s departure from Chelsea occurred after the team
finished in sixth place in the Premier League during his sole season in charge,
following previous coaching roles at Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.
Reports indicate that the agreement was reached after
numerous discussions with US Soccer Federation technical director Matt Crocker.
However, it is important to note that no formal contract has been signed, and
the federation’s board of directors has not yet approved a deal with
Pochettino.
According to ESPN, Pochettino is unable to sign a contract
with US Soccer until a financial matter with Chelsea is resolved.
It is anticipated that Pochettino will assume leadership of
the US squad in time for a friendly match against Canada scheduled for
September 7th in Kansas City, as reported by ESPN.
