Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has announced that the new 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named in honor of global afrobeats sensation, Rema.

This announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony held in Benin City on Wednesday.

Rema, who was present in Benin for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony alongside the governor, laying the first block for the arena.

Rema expressed his appreciation for the state government's advancements, enthusiasm, and development, and he committed to supporting the successful completion of the initiative.

“To be at this point, I am very proud of Edo State. I am proud of the growth. I am proud of the togetherness, I am proud of the zeal to make it greater, and I am proud of the passion.

“I am proud of the youths and ready to take part in anything that will give a drive to the youths, strengthen and motivate them. This is a blessing and I will see to it that this project is finished well.”

In a statement shared via X shortly after the event, Governor Obaseki expressed his delight in having the renowned music artist, @heisrema, join him for this significant occasion.

He revealed that the arena, to be known as ‘Rema’s Dome,’ will be situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.

The governor further elaborated that once completed, the arena will serve as a venue for a variety of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings.

He emphasized that the arena is expected to draw more visitors to the state, providing them with an opportunity to engage with the rich culture of Edo and contributing to job creation for the youth.

The event was attended by Uyi Oduwa Malaka, the Minister of Arts, Culture and Tourism, along with commissioners, special advisers, members of the PDP, and various other dignitaries.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has consistently represented Edo State, celebrating its heritage and the legacy of the ancient Benin empire through his music.

His recent track, ‘Benin Boys,’ featuring fellow Edo artist Shallipopi, pays homage to the city of Benin.
