The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set September 14 as the definitive deadline for linking the National Identification Number (NIN) with Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM).
In a statement released on Wednesday, NCC spokesperson Reuben Muoka instructed all mobile network operators (MNOs) to finalize the verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024.
Muoka reported that over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to their respective NINs, indicating a remarkable compliance rate of 96 percent, a significant rise from 69.7 percent in January 2024.
To ensure adherence to the NIN-SIM linkage policy, the NCC has mandated that all MNOs complete the necessary verification and linkage by the specified date. Starting September 15, 2024, the Commission anticipates that no SIM operating in Nigeria will lack a valid NIN.
The NCC, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has identified concerning cases.
The Commission remains dedicated to partnering with security agencies and other stakeholders to combat the sale of pre-registered SIMs, emphasizing the importance of national security and the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.
The NCC urges individuals who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage or who have encountered verification issues to promptly visit their service providers to update their information before the deadline.
Additionally, approved self-service portals are available for this purpose. The NCC also reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offenses that can result in imprisonment and fines.
The statement urged citizens to inform the Commission of any such activities by using our toll-free number (622) or by reaching out through our social media channels.
