The Federal Government has launched a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative for e-hailing cab operators, reducing the cost associated with converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG by 50 percent. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote the use of CNG, thereby alleviating transportation challenges and decreasing reliance on petrol and diesel in Nigeria. E-hailing service drivers are assured of a 50 percent discount when utilizing the newly introduced MyCNG App for their transportation services.

During the unveiling of the Rideshare CNG Conversion Incentive Programme and the MyCNG App in Abuja, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to ensuring accessible and affordable transportation for all Nigerians.

He stated, “The rideshare sector plays a crucial role in our urban transportation framework, offering flexible and economical mobility solutions to millions, especially the youth.

However, the escalating costs of conventional fuels have created significant challenges for both drivers and passengers, often resulting in increased fares and diminished access to affordable transport.”

The CNG Conversion Incentive Programme, alongside the MyCNG App, represents a proactive approach to these issues. By providing a 50 percent discount for rideshare drivers who register and schedule through the MyCNG App, the initiative not only enhances the feasibility of CNG but also alleviates the financial strain on drivers, ultimately leading to more affordable transportation for users.

“To our rideshare drivers, I urge you to fully embrace this opportunity. The MyCNG App serves not merely as a means to access discounts but as a pathway to a more sustainable livelihood. By opting for CNG, you are not only reducing costs but also contributing to the broader objective of national development.”

“Let me reiterate that the launch of this programme is just the beginning. We are committed to expanding and enhancing our efforts to promote the adoption of CNG and other alternative fuels across all sectors of our economy.

Together, we can build a cleaner, more affordable, and more prosperous future for all Nigerians”.

The Chief Executive Officer of Portland Gas, Folajimi Mohammed, introduced a groundbreaking mobile application aimed at promoting the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) among rideshare drivers.

Mohammed emphasized that the program provides significant incentives for drivers to convert their vehicles to CNG, resulting in reduced emissions, greenhouse gas, and lower fuel costs.

He explained that the software Is designed to efficiently schedule and manage all auto conversion appointments, ensuring a seamless experience for drivers transitioning to CNG. Additionally, the system establishes a comprehensive database of all conversions, enabling the company to monitor progress, identify trends, and continually enhance its services.

“It will allow us to provide better support to our customers, optimise our operations, and contribute valuable insights to the broader community of those using CNG. We believe that this initiative will set a new standard for service excellence in the CNG sector and further accelerate the adoption of this clean, efficient world.

“Portland Gas is honoured to play a role in this national effort, and we are committed to driving forward the CNG revolution in Nigeria. Together, with the continued collaboration and innovation of all stakeholders we can achieve a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for our country,” he stated.

In reference to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, the Project Director and Chief Executive Officer, Micheal Oluwagbemiga, emphasized the significance of ridesharing technology in facilitating transportation in environments with limited vehicle ownership.

Oluwagbemiga highlighted the global ride-hailing market’s valuation at approximately $113 billion in 2020, projecting its growth to reach $230 billion by 2026, indicating a substantial 8.75 percent increase between 2021 and 2026.

Furthermore, he noted that Nigeria accounted for approximately seven million individuals utilizing ridesharing services in 2020. In this context, Oluwagbemiga underscored the importance of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) not only as a means of reducing transportation costs but also as an opportunity for Nigeria to leverage its own resources for the first time in a considerable period.

“Nigeria’s e-hailing market is thriving and the Nigerian CNG sector is here to make the e-hailing industry move faster, to ensure that young people, old people, even middle-aged people can benefit from the government policy of cheaper, safer, more reliable, and cleaner fuel for the transportation sector,” Oluwagbemiga stated.
