The Honorable Martin Gama Abucha, Minister of Mining, will lead a delegation of esteemed South Sudanese investors and policymakers to the forthcoming Critical Minerals Africa summit. Notably, this summit will also host the inaugural South Sudan Mining Forum.

He will deliver a keynote address at the upcoming Critical Minerals Africa (CMA) 2024 summit, to be held in Cape Town from November 6th to 7th. Minister Abucha will lead a delegation of South Sudanese government officials and industry stakeholders representing the critical minerals sector.

South Sudan is actively forming alliances with public and private sector organizations, investors, exploration companies, and technology firms to harness its substantial mineral potential. The nation is believed to possess more than 40 million tons of copper, along with significant untapped reserves of zinc, manganese, nickel, and cobalt, which are vital for energy transition technologies. To highlight these opportunities, a specialized South Sudan Mining Forum will be held during the summit, facilitating connections between South Sudanese mining projects and international investors.

The Critical Minerals Africa 2024 summit on November 6-7 serves to position Africa as the primary investment destination for critical minerals. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energy 2024 conference (www.AECWeek.com/on November 4 - 8, offering delegates access to the full scope of energy, mining and finance leaders in Cape Town. In February of last year, the Ministry of Mining of South Sudan and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy of South Africa entered into a collaborative agreement. The agreement encompasses exploration, capacity building, and skills transfer within the mining sector. This partnership enables South Sudan to capitalize on South Africa's expertise and financial resources in the mining industry. Several South African entities, including the African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation and the Council for Geoscience, are actively pursuing new opportunities in South Sudan.

South Sudan is currently establishing a geological laboratory as part of a comprehensive geo-mapping initiative. This initiative aims to delineate the country's critical mineral geographies and reserve quantities. Collaboration with the Russian geological exploration company ROSGEO has been leveraged to create a mineral resource management system. Additionally, partnerships with the US firm REE-Magnesium and the Canadian mining company CVMR facilitate the use of satellite imaging technologies to map South Sudan's energy transition metals. At CMA 2024, Minister Abucha is expected to present further partnership and investment opportunities across South Sudan's critical mineral value chain.

In addition, South Sudan is revising its regulatory framework and establishing pertinent entities to draw in international investors and guarantee the sustainable management of its crucial mineral industry. Notably, a specialized mining chamber will be established to organize and manage partnerships with international investors and collaborators. CMA 2024 offers Minister Abucha a crucial platform to inform potential investors about the nation's regulatory improvements.

"South Sudan holds immense untapped potential in its critical minerals sector. Efforts by the government to partner with global investors on new mining projects showcase its commitment to attracting foreign investment and leveraging its mineral resources, while generating lucrative returns for investors," says Rachelle Kasongo, Event & Project Direct at Energy Capital & Power, organizers of CMA 2024.
