Six secondary school students from three schools in Nigeria have been recognized for their exceptional academic achievements by receiving the Top in the World Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards for the June and November 2023 Cambridge examination series.

The Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, Ms. Lucy Pearson, made an announcement on Thursday evening during the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards ceremony held in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the British Council, in partnership with Cambridge International Examinations, acknowledges the exceptional accomplishments of students from various partner schools across Nigeria.

With regard to the English as a second language speaking endorsement, the country director announced that two Nigerian students accomplished this feat in June.

Pearson stated that two Nigerian students achieved remarkable success in the June 2023 Cambridge Examination series, while four additional students demonstrated exceptional performance in the November 2023 series.

She mentioned that six Nigerian students were from Brookstone School, James Hope College, Lagos, and The Ambassadors Group of Schools.

Oluwademilade David and Omaghomi Sharon from Brookstone School were the winners of the June 2023 series.

While Obodoechi Chiedozie, Favour Chinecherem, and Fehintoluwa Erinayo are all affiliated with James Hope College, located in Lagos. Additionally, Bamidele Sharon is associated with Ambassadors Group of Schools.

Pearson also mentioned that 95 students from 37 British Council partner schools achieved the notable distinction of obtaining the highest marks among British Council partner schools in Nigeria.

She said, “These are in subjects such as sociology, ICT, and business studies.

“This award is granted to students who have obtained the highest marks in the world in a single subject.

“Additionally, 71 students received the Top in Nigeria awards for achieving the highest standard mark in the country for individual subjects.

“Further accolades included 48 High Achievement’ Awards and eight Best Across Awards, recognising students with the highest cumulative standard marks across multiple subjects.

“We use strict criteria to calculate Cambridge Awards. These criteria ensure that the achievements we recognise are consistent across the world in all subjects and at all qualification levels,” the official said.

According to Pearson, the globally recognized qualifications facilitate students’ admission to prestigious universities, access to exceptional career prospects, and the establishment of a more fulfilling life.

The country Director expressed the Council’s esteemed privilege in collaborating with partner schools to facilitate the delivery of United Kingdom assessments and qualifications within the Nigerian educational landscape.

On his part, Mr. Juan Visser, the Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa International Education at Cambridge University, commended the Nigerian students for their outstanding academic performance in the June and November 2023 examination series.

Mr. Visser stated that each component of Cambridge education, encompassing the curriculum, teaching and learning methodologies, resources, and assessment techniques, has been meticulously crafted to facilitate the optimal development of learners’ potential.

“The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards recognise exceptional performances around the world in Cambridge examinations.

“The awards reflect the talent and hard work of learners and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of their teachers and parents.

“With the qualifications that they have gained, Cambridge learners are well prepared to take on exciting opportunities that lie ahead and achieve their dreams.

On behalf of the awardees, Oluwademilade David expressed their delight in being acknowledged. He encouraged Nigerian students to dedicate themselves fully to their studies.
