Lagos clarifies that there are no plans to reinstate the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in July.
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said that the recent social media reports claiming the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation and the commencement of movement restrictions by the end of July are false and should be disregarded. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources,
Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement clarifying that the recent viral news is the
work of malicious individuals attempting to mislead residents.
He kindly requested all residents to disregard the content
of the viral fake news and continue their lawful business activities. He
clarified that there would be no restrictions on movement on the last Saturday
of July, contrary to the erroneous information included in the fake news.
Wahab clarified that the announcement made by Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the sanitation awareness event held on Sunday at
Campos playground on Lagos Island, was regarding the state’s initiative to
launch a weekly community-based awareness campaign involving all residents.
In his words: “The Governor also stated that state
government officials will lead from the front every week by going round to join
residents in cleaning their environment in a voluntary manner while preaching
the message.”
Wahab noted that the governor never made an official
announcement regarding the commencement of the monthly exercise and restriction
in July or any other specific month at this time.
There is currently no specific month designated for cleaning
activities. The Commissioner strongly encourages all residents to adopt a
culture of maintaining clean surroundings on an ongoing basis, rather than
waiting for a designated month declared by the government.
