The decision to shut down the school was made by the Federal
Ministry of Education, which has been unable to resolve the prolonged issue.
Reports indicate that the violence on Monday, which resulted in property damage
and destruction of official vehicles, was the final straw.
Even members of the Governing Council narrowly escaped being
attacked. The embattled Provost, Dr. Wahab Azeez, also had his official
residence vandalized by angry students.
The Governing Council, under the leadership of Dr. Adenuga
Olatunde, was unable to convene a meeting with the aggrieved parties as
students and staff, both teaching and non-teaching, protested against Azeez's
presence on campus.
His office, along with those of other management personnel,
has been closed since May 26 of this year. It is important to note that a
crisis at the college began on May 26, prompted by the employees' assertion
that Azeez's tenure had expired.
Azeez was initially appointed in 2019 for a four-year term,
which was renewed in May of the previous year. However, in June of last year,
President Bola Tinubu enacted legislation that established a single five-year
term for provosts.
Azeez contends that this new law does not apply to him, as
he had already commenced a new term, while the employees maintain that his
tenure has indeed lapsed.
