With just a few days to go before the Summer Olympics kicks off in Paris on Friday, 26 July, the latest episode of Kaspersky’s Tomorrow Unlocked examines why deepfakes have become the hackers’ tool of choice to promote disinformation.

Tomorrow Unlocked is a YouTube channel about technology culture created by Kaspersky. It focuses on stories showing how technology helps us create a better future, providing a lineup of original documentaries and series.

Recently, two fake documentaries have been released on the Internet looking to discredit the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are narrated by deepfake versions of Tom Cruise and Elon Musk. These videos show just how significant the threat of deepfakes can be in disinformation campaigns.

The first episode of ‘The Hacker Games’ series of Tomorrow Unlocked sees AI-generated host Kai speak to a wide audience of not just cybersecurity professionals to understand why fake documentaries have appeared before the games. An invited technical expert gives a breakdown of how deepfakes actually work. The episode also highlights how governments are seeing deepfakes as one of the most significant cybersecurity threats today.

As athletes have been training for years to compete at the Olympics, hackers have also committed to expanding on their skills to exploit this event using deepfake videos, phishing web pages, Wi-Fi spots and other tools. ‘The Hacker Games’ series explores some of the expectations around potential attacks during the Olympics.
