Kasper Hjulmand has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Danish national football team.
Kasper Hjulmand announced his resignation as head coach of Denmark on Friday, emphasizing the need for "fresh ideas" following the team's elimination in the last 16 of Euro 2024.
The 52-year-old had been in charge since May 2020 but
decided to step down after Denmark's defeat to Germany on June 29.
Hjulmand previously guided Denmark to the semi-finals of the
European Championship three years ago, but the team was eliminated in the group
stage of the 2022 World Cup.
“I can feel that it will be best for the team that a new
face and new ideas come in, who can write a new big chapter for this amazing
team, and therefore it is best, that someone else leads the team forward,”
Hjulmand said in a Danish Football Association (DBU) statement.
“It’s not about me. It’s about what’s best for the team,” he
said.
Morten Wieghorst, assistant coach to Hjulmand, will
assume the role of head coach on an interim basis until the end of the current
calendar year. During this period, the team will participate in the Nations
League matches against Switzerland, Serbia, and the reigning European
champions, Spain, in preparation for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
“We have a fantastic pool of talent in Danish football, and
I am very much looking forward to tackling the tasks in the autumn,” former
Celtic defender Wieghorst said.
“Together with the staff and the players, I will give
everything so that we can achieve success in the exciting matches in the
Nations League,” he added.
