The recent product announcement from the company introduced
three high-performance camera sensors equipped with cutting-edge technologies.
Samsung asserts that these sensors will significantly enhance the quality of
telephoto, ultrawide, and selfie cameras, elevating them to the same
exceptional standard as the typically superior main rear cameras found in
high-end smartphones.
The latest sensor lineup includes the Isocell HP9, a
groundbreaking 200-megapixel sensor specifically designed for telephoto lenses,
enabling enhanced zoom capabilities. Additionally, also introduced, the Isocell
JN5, a 50-megapixel sensor optimized for compact devices, promising improved
performance in smaller form factors. Lastly, the Isocell GNJ, a larger
50-megapixel sensor, focuses on delivering superior image quality and extended
battery life in flagship devices.
Could These Sensors Be Incorporated into the Galaxy S25
Series?
Despite only now receiving an official announcement, the
200-megapixel Isocell HP9 is already in use in Vivo’s X100 Ultra flagship,
which has received favorable reviews, especially for its exceptional zoom
performance. However, the latest leaks do not mention a 200-megapixel upgrade
to either of the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s telephoto cameras, so it seems unlikely
that we’ll see this level of performance from next year’s Samsung flagship.
The Isocell GNJ, however, features a very similar
specification to the 50-megapixel main cameras currently found in the Galaxy
S24 and Galaxy S24+, making it a candidate for the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+
next year. The Isocell GNJ is slightly larger, at 1/1.56” vs the 1/1.57”
sensors of this year’s models, and offers improved image quality and better
battery life

Isocell HP9
Samsung’s latest innovation in camera technology, the
Isocell HP9, marks a significant milestone in the realm of telephoto
photography. This 200-megapixel primary camera, designed specifically for
telephoto lenses, promises exceptional low-light performance. By utilizing a
binned 12-megapixel mode and incorporating a novel highly-refractive microlens
material, the Isocell HP9 enhances light-gathering capabilities, resulting in
superior quality zoomed-in videos even in dimly lit environments. This
advancement represents a major leap forward in Samsung’s pursuit of
cutting-edge imaging technology.
Samsung asserts that the Isocell HP9 will enable telephoto
cameras to achieve comparable performance to main cameras in terms of image
quality, autofocus, HDR, and capture speed. Additionally, it offers 2x and 4x
digital zoom modes, enabling a hybrid zoom level of 12x when combined with a 3x
optical telephoto lens.
The sensor is available in a 1/1.4-inch format with
0.56-micrometer pixels or larger 2.24-micrometer superpixels when switched to
12-megapixel mode. This allows users to prioritize resolution or low-light
performance based on their specific requirements.
Isocell GNJ
The Isocell GNJ sensor, a 50-megapixel innovation,
introduces in-sensor zoom technology, promising enhanced video clarity and
reduced artifacts compared to its predecessors. Samsung asserts that this
sensor will deliver superior contrast and lower power consumption, resulting in
up to 29 percent savings in preview mode and 34 percent savings when capturing
4K 60fps videos. While camera technology is not typically regarded as a crucial
factor influencing battery life, its integration into the upcoming Galaxy S25
and Galaxy S25+ models could provide substantial advantages for users who
extensively utilize the camera feature.

The Isocell JN5 is a compact 50-megapixel sensor that
utilizes cutting-edge technologies to mitigate its diminutive size. Notably, it
offers enhanced low-light performance, rapid autofocus, expanded dynamic range,
and swift shooting capabilities. Samsung anticipates the Isocell JN5’s
versatility in smartphone cameras, catering to primary, ultrawide, telephoto,
and front-facing lenses.
