    Olufemi Adeyemi

In the regions of Central and West Africa, NESTLÉ endeavors to furnish both children and adults with the fundamental nutritional requirements necessary for their wholesome growth and development.

Food insecurity and malnutrition pose significant challenges to numerous communities across Africa, necessitating innovative approaches to tackle these interconnected issues. The nutritional landscape in various regions of the continent is intricate, with World Bank reports indicating a substantial proportion of children suffering from stunted growth and anemia, primarily attributed to inadequate nutrition.

Consequently, it is imperative for food manufacturing enterprises operating within the African continent to assume their corporate social responsibility by ensuring their products are fortified with essential nutrients that directly contribute to the alleviation of prevalent nutritional deficiencies among the populace.

    Meeting the population’s nutritional needs

Affordability is a crucial consideration in addressing malnutrition and food insecurity challenges.

For numerous communities, the financial burden associated with obtaining nutritious sustenance presents a significant impediment to the attainment of a well-rounded dietary regimen.

In the Central and West Africa region, NESTLÉ is committed to ensuring that both children and adults have access to the essential nutrients they require for optimal growth and development.

“In 2022, Nestlé served consumers in our region with 89.5 billion servings of products fortified with at least one of the 4 main micronutrients we are deficient in (Iron, Iodine, Zinc, Vitamin A), to help them address the micronutrient deficiency gaps, particularly, iron deficiency. Our recent introduction of NIDO Milk & Soya in Nigeria is part of the company’s commitment to making better nutrition affordable and accessible across the region. This shows how affordability can be integrated into nutritional solutions, ensuring that essential nutrients are within reach for all, regardless of socioeconomic status’, – Salomé Azevedo, Business Executive Officer – Dairy, NESTLÉ Central & West Africa”.

Recognizing that accessibility also impacts affordability, NESTLÉ utilizes locally sourced soybeans for the production of NIDO Milk & Soya in Nigeria. Through this localized approach, the company not only supports the local agricultural sector but also ensures the product's ready availability to consumers within the region. This strategy reduces transportation costs associated with long-distance sourcing, ultimately resulting in a lower product price for the end consumer.

    A sustainable solution

Sustainability is a core principle of NESTLÉ's operations. By supporting Nigerian farmers, we not only ensure a reliable source of income for them but also contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with dairy production. As NESTLÉ works towards achieving its global target of a 20% reduction in emissions by 2025, initiatives such as these exemplify the possibility of simultaneously achieving nutritional objectives and fulfilling our responsibilities as a responsible corporate entity.
