Approximately 8.5 million Microsoft devices were impacted by an outage linked to CrowdStrike.
A widespread technology disruption occurred due to a software update implemented by the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, impacting approximately 8.5 million Microsoft devices. Microsoft provided this information in an official blog post published on Saturday.
"We currently estimate that CrowdStrike's update
affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows
machines," it said in the blog.
A software update Initiated by CrowdStrike, a prominent
global cybersecurity organization, resulted in significant system disruptions
that adversely affected flight operations, disrupted broadcasting services, and
impeded customer access to essential services such as healthcare and banking.
"While the percentage was small, the broad economic and
societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many
critical services," Microsoft said in its blog post.
CrowdStrike has collaborated in developing a solution that
will facilitate Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure in expediting a resolution, as
confirmed by Microsoft. Additionally, Microsoft is actively collaborating with
Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform to share pertinent information
regarding the industry-wide impact observed by Microsoft.
The aviation sector Is currently addressing the aftermath of
a significant IT outage that occurred on Saturday. This disruption resulted in
the cancellation of numerous flights, leaving passengers stranded or facing
extensive delays. Airports and airlines were severely impacted by the outage,
leading to operational challenges and inconvenience for travelers.
Delta Air Lines, a prominent airline significantly impacted
by the current situation, reported that as of 10:00 AM EDT (14:00 GMT) on
Saturday, over 600 flights had been canceled. Furthermore, the airline
anticipates additional flight cancellations.
