China has made significant advancements and holds a prominent position in the field of generative AI, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and technological progress.

United Nations data revealed on Wednesday that, China has demonstrated remarkable progress in the field of generative AI innovations, particularly in the development of chatbots. The nation has filed a substantial number of patents, surpassing its closest competitor, the United States, by a significant margin of six times.

The rapid growth of Generative AI, capable of producing text, images, computer code, and even music from existing data, has been observed in recent years. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which facilitates international patent recognition, over 50,000 patent applications related to Generative AI have been filed in the past decade.

Approximately 25% of the cases were submitted in the current year alone, as per the report..

"This is a booming area this is an area that is growing at increasing speed. And it's somewhere that we expect to grow even more," Christopher Harrison, WIPO Patent Analytics Manager, told reporters.

More than 38,000 GenAI inventions were filed by China between 2014-2023 versus 6,276 filed by the United States over the same period, WIPO said.

Harrison said the Chinese patent applications covered a broad area of sectors from autonomous driving to publishing to document management.

South Korea, Japan, and India were ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in terms of economic growth. India exhibited the most rapid growth rate among these countries, as indicated by the data.

Among the leading candidates were ByteDance of China, the proprietor of the video application TikTok, the Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group, and Microsoft, a supporter of the startup OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT.

As an expert in the field, I can confirm that chatbots with human-like discourse capabilities are already being extensively utilized by retailers and other entities to enhance customer service. However, it is important to note that GenAI possesses the potential to revolutionize numerous other economic sectors, including science, publishing, transportation, and security, as highlighted by WIPO's Harrison.

"The patent data suggests this is an area that is going to have a profound impact across many different industrial sectors going forward," said WIPO's Harrison, highlighting the scientific sector where GenAI-created molecules have the potential to expedite drug development.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) anticipates a forthcoming surge in patent applications and intends to publish a subsequent data update, potentially utilizing Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to elucidate the trend..
