The artists behind the popular song “Ogechi,” Brown Joel, Hyce, and BoyPee, have shared their experience in persuading Afrobeats star Davido to collaborate on the track.

The trio, each ”ith their own successful music careers, appear to jointly own the track, which was released on May 10th.

In the Nigerian music industry, it is uncommon for relatively unknown artists to collaborate with an established musician like Davido, especially in their debut release.

The unexpected collaboration is a significant achievement that many aspiring artists would greatly value. As a result, there is considerable interest in learning how the trio secured such a sought-after collaboration with one of Africa’s most renowned musicians.

In an interview with YouTuber Didee Talks, the group disclosed one of the industry’s best-kept secrets.

The group stated that they have been actively pursuing their long-term aspiration for more than five years, ever since BoyPee’s musical talent was discovered.

BoyPee explained, “It all started in 2019 when the Cubana Chief Priest expressed his desire to meet with me. Since then, he has been actively supporting

BoyPee said, “It began in 2019 when the Cubana Chief Priest requested to see me. He has been pushing my music since 2019. I did a song for Chief Priest, then. He is a very free man. I knew Cubana Chief Priest through a friend. The friend pushed me to record for Cubana. I didn’t know who Chief Priest was; I had to review his profile. I recorded the song, and a friend of mine sent it to Chief Priest, and he reposted my song.”

BoyPee, the well-known singer, characterized the collaboration as a transformative experience.

He recounted, “Anytime Priest calls me, my heart always races. He had not called me on a video call before, so when he called me, I was surprised. When I picked up the video call, he said, ‘How far? Where are you now? David is here, and he wants to speak with you.’ I said, ‘My God.’

“As Davido spoke, I wasn’t paying attention to what he was saying; I was just excited and shouted, ‘Is this Davido?’ I was in a boat and had to turn back because Chief Priest said we should come to his place, where Davido was. It was a thing of now or never. I had to call the other guys to get ready quickly.”

BoyPee made the unexpected disclosure that he has been trying to get in touch with Davido via Instagram since 2020, convinced that one day, the singer would appreciate his efforts and talent.

Brown Joel reflected on their rapid success as "overwhelming," while BoyPee expressed appreciation for Cubana Chief Priest's continuous support and referred to him as a significant "influencer."

Brown Joel also shared the emotional impact of the Afrobeats star's feature, stating, "Davido recorded his verse, and Chief Priest came in, heard the verse, and started crying. Davido recorded his verse just two days before the remix was released. The song's theme, 'God's Time,' perfectly aligned with the timing of the events."

When inquired about their musical background and self-awareness, they responded negatively and attributed their union to singer Zyno—Topboy during a tour in April, resulting in the birth of “Ogechi.”

Brown Joel expressed that with their recent success, they feel overwhelmed, and there is an underlying tension about the future.

They highlighted that the swift collaboration with Davido taught them that “dreams do come true.”

“Ogechi” quickly gained popularity on TikTok, with over 200 remixed videos in just two weeks. The remix of the song, featuring Davido, was released on 26 June, the day after Davido’s wedding, propelling the track to new heights. The music video, paying tribute to Davido’s wife Chioma’s heritage, has accumulated over 1.4 million views on YouTube.

The song "Ogechi" remix by Davido also claimed the top spot on the TurnTable Nigeria Top 100 chart for the week of 28 June – 4 July 2024, garnering 6.76 million on-demand streams and 49.3 million radio broadcasts.

It surpassed tracks by well-known Nigerian artists. Burna Boy's "Higher" secured the second position, with Olamide's "Metaverse" following closely in third place.

This marks Davido's second chart-topping hit of the year, after his collaboration on Kizz Daniel's "Twe Twe" remix.
